Four Treasurers
It is not uncommon for friends and colleagues to congregate in the exhibit hall during the breaks. What is unique about this encounter is that it contains the last four HPS treasurers, left to right in order of their service, Kathy Shingleton, Mike Lewandowski, Steve King, and Ali Simpkins.

The HPS Science Support Committee hosted its first one-of-a-kind "Virtual Science Teacher Workshop" on 17 July 2022 during the annual meeting in Spokane. The option was available to have local science teachers attend in person. However, we only had virtual attendees, including six science teachers (5th, 7th, and 8th grades) from Waco, Texas; Richland, Washington; and College Station, Texas.
Linda Morris (Texas Low Level Radioactive Waste Disposal Compact Commission) and Kenneth Krieger (Radiation Technology, Inc.) were the primary instructors who spearheaded this workshop and made it successful. Other instructors were George Tabatadze (Washington State University), Dan Strom (US Transuranium and Uranium Registries, Washington State University), and Ian Lake (Beaumont Health, Michigan). The topics covered in the workshop were Introduction and Workshop Information, Radiation Fundamentals, Overview of Biological Effects of Radiation, Radiation Meters and Experiments, Overview of Radioactive Waste, and Careers in Health Physics. A free instrumentation kit was sent to all the participating teachers prior to the workshop—the kit included a working Geiger counter, Lantern mantle, piece of naturally radioactive Fiesta® ware, and charcoal cartridge. The electronic files with all teaching materials and copy of the PowerPoint presentation were also included in the kit.

The Science Support Committee worked hard to put together the workshop materials, which are available through the HPS website. With the successful launch of this virtual workshop, the committee may consider doing this again at the next annual meeting and will be soliciting for more participation from teachers. If chapters wish to host science teacher workshops, they can reach out to any of the Science Support Committee members.
Overall, the workshop was a great success and the committee thanks all the instructors who put together a phenomenal workshop.

Making Things Happen
A lot goes on behind the scenes at an HPS meeting and some of the people working hard to make the meeting successful are HPS Executive Director Brett Burk; members of the Secretariat and registration desk helpers Cassidy Burk, Dawn Lewandowski, Lori Strong, and Jill Drupa; and photographer Casper Sun with Standards Committee Chair Antonio Triventi.
